EASTER AROUND THE REGION
MCC of Christ the Liberator, New Jersey began their journey toward Easter on Ash Wednesday... During this season of reflection and prayer, our simple prayer was for God's Spirit to continue to heal our spirits, hearts and minds...  so that we might find wholeness from God's Holiness... to celebrate EASTER!

For the Ash Wednesday service an eight foot high plain wooden cross was placed front and center of our worship space.  Worshippers were give pieces of burlap representing sackcloth and passed stones to each repeating the phrase, "I cannot throw stones at you because I, too, have sin in my life."   In preparation for communion folks were invited to come forward and place a strip of "sackcloth" on the cross in symbolic confession and offered the imposition of ashes.

Throughout Lent, the cross remained front and center of our worship space, the communion table, draped in purple, also held five sets of candles (and the Christ candle) which were lit in succession each Sunday to mark our Lenten journey.  The symbols of sackcloth, stones and nails were offered and available during the response time for each Sunday of Lent.

CTL folks gathered early on Palm Sunday for a Fellowship Breakfast Feast followed by Palm Sunday worship which included a procession and waving of the palms with special music.

On Good Friday, folks gathered to find the cross embedded with mirrors... a visual reminder for whom God's love and forgiveness was intended. A table draped in black fabric and placed in front of the cross holding seven sets of candles and the Christ candle.  Instead of a monetary offering, worshippers "received" God's offering with each person being given a nail and a small piece of mirror to hold and on which to "reflect" personally during the service. Communion was by intinction with a common loaf and cup followed by The Tenebrae (including scripture with interludes of special music and the extinguishing of the candles in succession).  Worshippers left in silence and darkness.

Our EASTER WORSHIP celebration began with a full choir procession joined by the congregation singing the traditional hymn Christ the Lord Is Risen Today with trumpet accompaniment.  Music and fellowship were central to our Easter celebration. The Easter Morning Message (which included "something" for all ages) was entitled: Pink Golf Balls, Purple Forks and a Parable from Winnie the Pooh.  The "mirrored" cross was draped with a white cloth and was adorned with a "crown of thorns" holding green English ivy and three live Easter lily blossoms representing the Resurrection.   Following worship a  buffet Easter lunch was hosted by the CTL hospitality team for everyone.

MCC of Winston-Salem, NC, celebrated Easter Sunday with two musical celebrations designed by the church's music ministry teams.  The morning celebration was presented by Voices of Praise, the praise and worship team of the church.  The music was compiled by Jeff Cummings, director of the music team.  The narration for the musical celebration was written and narrated by Terry Brown, a member of the Board of Directors.

The evening musical celebration, "Above All" was compiled by Gray King, choir director and Tommy Dunn, pianist.  The narration was written by Michael Lange, member of the Board of Directors and Rev. Joe Cobb.  Roger Wooten served as the narrator.

Also, for the first time in recent history, the church participated in the denomination-wide Easter offering for MCC's Eastern Europe Initiative.  To date, we have received nearly $250. toward the offering.

In Allentown , PA , MCC of the Lehigh Valley 's Holy Week featured spirit-filled gathering after gathering in Room 208 at the Merchants Square Mall.

Starting on Monday, April 2 MCCLV hosted its monthly "Ministry Monday" with a special focus on the church's upcoming Tricky Tray Fundraiser. On Wednesday, April 4 participants gathered for the final class of the "Attitude 101" Lenten Series, with a topic that evening of Envy/Kindness & Gluttony/Temperance. On Thursday, April

April 5 MCCLV gathered together for a Holy Thursday Foot Washing Service, based on John 13. Old feet, young feet and middle-aged feet were washed to follow the example of Jesus washing the feet of his disciples and a special note was made to have warmer water for future foot washings. Then on Friday, April 6 the church assembled for a Good Friday worship service with a closer look at Psalm 22.

MCCLV's Easter Sunday services on April 8 were a celebration of resurrection, renewal and re-creation, with over 150 people gathered at the church for worship. MCCLV's Tejas Women's Group sponsored a pre-service Easter Egg Hunt, with 13 children participating in the search for eggs and a special Kid's Breakfast. At the AM service, MCCLV's Choir led the congregation in song, accompanied by piano, organ and drums, while the PM Service featured hymns from Chalice Hymnal with piano accompaniment. The sermon at both services centered on Luke 24 and an active response to the power of the resurrection.

On a very different note - on Easter Sunday it was announced that there were 10 U.S. deaths in Iraq this weekend. As we praise God for Holy Week at MCCLV, may we also be reminded of a world in need of healing. Let us pray for peace.

On Easter Sunday, New Light MCC of Hagerstown, MD , raised $382.65 for the UFMCC East European appeal. They also brought in 7 new members.

Holy Week at MCC Rehoboth, DE , included blessing of the palms on Palm Sunday, a Good Friday service with reading of the Passion and adoration of the cross, and an Easter celebration service featuring a sung communion liturgy.  Our new choir sang on both Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday and was wonderful.  Additionally, Rev. Tom Bohache participated in the Easter Sunrise service sponsored by the Lewes-Rehoboth Association of Churches in downtown Rehoboth.

Imani MCC, Durham, NC , along with others, presented the "Once Upon a Tree" on Good Friday.  The cantata followed the life of Jesus from Palm Sunday until Resurrection Morning and included the acts of communion and the stripping of the altar performed by pastor, Rev. Wanda Floyd.  The wonderful thing and the history making part of the event is the fact that the participants in the cantata were all from various groups in our community: Triangle Gay Men's Chorus, Eno River Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, area high schools, a world-renowned bass singer, a narrator from Los Angeles, CA and of course the choir from Imani MCC.  It is our desire that more events that crosses over boundaries and faith traditions will be done in the near future.

Imago Dei MCC, Glen Mills, PA , had a full-house for Palm Sunday services, which were led by the Lay Delegate as the pastor was recovering from knee surgery.  The message was inspiring, the energy electric, and the music phenominal as we were encouraged to embrace our role as being "guide on bearers" for Christ.  Our Good Friday Service was facilitated by our assistant worship coordinator and a team of laity in combining dramatic readings with contemporary images of suffering and hope.  Our Easter Service was once again a full-house led by our pastor who posed the question "Will we serve Christ in Love?"

Easter at MCC Baltimore, MD , was a time of looking to response to our call, just as Jesus did.   On Good Friday we had a service of Tenebrae with readings, the extinguishing of candles, and a time of reflection as we hammered nails into a wooden cross.  On Resurrection Sunday at both services that cross appeared again and members of the congregation were invited to come forward and participate in the Resurrection as they inserted fresh flowers into the netting wrapping the cross.   Our praise team provided music for the Praise Celebration Service.

Message from Rev. Elder Arlene Ackerman

Greetings Region! I am writing to you from the Board of Elders meeting in West Texas on Thursday, May 24. This week has been focused on planning for 2008 as the Elders all work on our work plans for next year and the focus of where MCC is going based on our MCC Strategic Plan. We also worked on ways to improve how we do the work of the Elders in supporting local churches and leaders. Soon a full report will be coming out with many details.

As you may know I have focused a lot of attention over the past few months on churches going through pastoral transitions. Presently every church in our region either has a pastor, interim pastor or are seriously looking at a candidate. I have also been working with a couple of churches doing assessments to help them look at why their church is stuck on a growth barrier and/or going through a time of conflict.

We are also preparing for General Conference. It looks like it is not only coming together but that it will be an exiting time of renewal and resourcing! Also, I just learned that the church with the most people attending and the church with the highest percentage attending will receive a banner from each region. They will keep the banner until the next regional conference where we will again pass it on to the qualifying churches. I wonder which churches will take home the banner?

Last, I am planning on taking some personal time of rest and reflection this summer. These past four years have been very fast paced and I have taken very little time off. The week following General Conference I will be taking off with my family and then beginning with the last week in July and through August I will be taking off. I pray that you will offer me your support in taking this time. My hope is to return with a refreshed spirit ready again to serve you and the fellowship. While I am away, Rev. Jen will be available in the Region 3 Office and there will be an Elder on call.

I am looking forward to seeing many of you soon at General Conference!
